Dear Budding ☆Stars☆
If you are seeking the footlights of Broadway or other theater and film opportunities in New York City or beyond, you've come to the right place. Because, whether you are a man or woman, what casting directors most hope to see -- even before they see you in person -- is
a glimpse of your personality captured in a moment in time.
The game of showbiz has always been about projecting "the right image," and it begins with a series of compelling, high-resolution digital photographs. That's what I do, and as an expert portrait photographer, I work at a very deep level.
My name is Bill Allen, but please call me, Bill. And I trust you will call me after you finish reading this, if not before. I'm ready to talk whenever you are:
(See bottom of page for link to map and directions.)
When you call, you might imagine you're talking to a wise seafarer. My voice is gravel, but I keep my eyes on the horizon, and the shoot is always about your future.
Putting a portfolio together can be expensive. Maybe you're still looking for the right gig or your first break. Maybe you just need a change or an update, but you're squeezed. I can help.
I am a pro at portraits, in part, because I take the time to capture the essence of you.
Sure, you know how to package your credentials on paper. But when it comes to capturing you in photographs, well, you don't trust your acting career to amateurs and charlatans. What you need is a highly experienced pro who can also do it affordably.
There are lots of headshot photographers out there on the Internet. What you don't need is a handful of headshots that make it look like you just stepped out of a photo booth on Coney Island.
Some headshot photographers are excellent at business and will gladly take your money. Some will even charge $300, $400, $500 or more for the privilege of sitting before their camera.
…Some are school photographers (present and former). They are so used to shooting 100 faces an hour, they can't wait to get to the next one. Some are just fast-talkers who made a name for themselves at the Sears studio, the passport shop down the street or maybe the DMV (Some may still work there). And with some you just have to watch out, especially if you are a woman.
I make a living as a
portrait photographer
who can not only capture
the sparkle in your eyes,
but the sparks of lightning
deep inside that make you -- YOU.

My Approach
I was trained by William Mortensen, who photographed the Great Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich and elevated classic portrait photography to an art form. The Photographic Society of America enshrines his work.
Like DiCaprio and Winslet or Bogey and Bacall before them, classic never goes out of style. Mortensen was a classic himself. My goal is to give you a high level of professionalism with extra charm and zing to help turn you into a modern-day classic.
Unlike other photographers, I don't just take a dozen or two dozen shots.
I shoot 100!
To help you stand out from the parade of faces casting directors see, I help you tap into your natural stream and bring your emotions to life. Whatever your repertoire of expression, we explore the expanse with style -- from calm and confident to demure and thoughtful. …From fun and playful, to angry and pouting. …From coy to sexy and seductive.
Mining "Magic from Within"
Few of us were born with "knockout" good looks (my own skin is made of leather). But whether you are pretty or handsome, or more like average, it doesn't really matter when it comes to theater portraits. Your personality is what's important, and the magic I seek to capture always comes from within.
I believe that each of us was endowed with unique qualities and the miracle of a soul by our Creator. Far beyond the mechanics of our 43 facial muscles, are the heart, mind and soul that give rise to our emotions and facial expressions.
In theater, actors and actresses wear many masks, real and imagined. The successful actor always begins with intimate self knowledge. But the gift is letting bright light and stark shadow emerge through the prism of your talents for others to see.
You don't have to agree with all I believe. But you can respect my experience, talent and style -- and I will always respect yours.
As they say, you only have one opportunity to make a good first impression. Casting directors may only see your image for a moment. You need to make them Stop… to Surprise them …. Spark their imagination… Take their breath away.
Your emotions must flow, so when they see your portrait and look you in the eyes, they can see you are genuine. That's how we work to make them want you. That's what attracts them, and that's what makes you irresistible.
Portrait photography combines everything I just told you with the craftsmanship and flair of the artist. We bathe you with expert lighting -- diffuse, spot and key -- and capture the light that bounces back to the lens. When you see the finished portraits, you can almost feel the brushstrokes. We always enhance your best features, and retouching is seldom required.
So how much will this cost?
If you read this far, you know you can afford me. But you don't know why I can offer portrait shots this low. My studio is not in Manhattan. I'm 20 minutes away in Garfield, New Jersey. My overhead is very low. I also enjoy my work immensely, and I pass these savings on to you.
